Fear of failure can be an invisible cage, keeping us from stepping into our full potential. For years, I lived in that cage, convinced that success meant avoiding mistakes at all costs. But life taught me differently. My journey from fear to freedom was not linear, but it was transformative, and it all started with a single turning point.
When Fear Held Me Back
There was a time when I let fear dictate my choices. I thought I had to follow a "safe" path to prove my worth. Nursing school seemed like the answer, but when I flunked out, my confidence crumbled. I felt unworthy, ashamed, and afraid to try again.
Even when I returned to hairstyling, a talent I’d nurtured since childhood, I hesitated. I was afraid to charge what I was worth, worried clients would reject me or question my skills. I played small, sticking to what felt safe instead of chasing the bold, creative dreams I secretly longed for.
Fear whispered that failure would mean I wasn’t good enough, so I avoided risks. I didn’t expand my horizons, didn’t invest in myself, and didn’t dare to dream bigger.
The Turning Point

Everything changed a year after my divorce. I found myself standing at a crossroads: sink or swim. The life I’d imagined had fallen apart, and I had to choose: would I let fear keep me stagnant, or would I rise and redefine what success looked like for me?
Looking at my children, I realized I had a responsibility to show them that life wasn’t over for me—in fact, it had just begun. I had to show them that dreams cannot be tied to who is in your life but must flow from the passion within your soul.
With a deepening faith, I found strength I didn’t know I had. My faith catapulted me forward, empowering me to face my fears head-on. I realized that fear didn’t have to paralyze me; it could propel me if I let it.
How I Learned to Take Risks
Facing fear wasn’t easy, but I discovered ways to move past it. I started by focusing on small, manageable steps. Tackling one goal at a time made the journey feel less overwhelming and more achievable. I also surrounded myself with supportive people who believed in me even when I doubted myself. Having a circle of encouragement was a game-changer. My faith reminded me that I wasn’t walking this path alone. With every setback, I turned to prayer and reflection, asking for guidance and clarity. (Psalm 3:4-5)
Another key realization was understanding that failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s a stepping stone to it. Every setback taught me something valuable, whether it was a better approach to my work or a deeper understanding of myself. I began to embrace mistakes as lessons and stopped letting them define my worth. The journey wasn’t easy, but with faith as my anchor and my children as my motivation, I began to break free from fear’s grip.
Where I Am Now
Today, I’m thriving in ways I once thought were impossible. I own a salon that not only provides for my family but empowers women to embrace their beauty. I’ve expanded into interior design, blogging, and consulting. I’m also preparing to launch a nonprofit to give back to the community that shaped me.
But my greatest success isn’t in my professional achievements, it’s in the example I set for my children. They see me pursuing my dreams with courage, faith, and joy. They know that setbacks aren’t failures but opportunities to grow.
If you’re facing fear, know this: It doesn’t have to define you. Fear is a sign that you’re stepping into something new and meaningful. Trust your journey, lean on your faith, and take the leap.
